Che Flores is the NBA’s first out nonbinary and transgender referee, making that revelation in a story published by GQ on Monday.Flores, who uses the pronoun they, is entering their second season as an NBA staff referee, after working 35 games last season. They also worked 12 games as a nonstaff official during the 2021-22 season.“One piece I was missing for myself was that no one knew how I identified,” Flores told GQ. “Being misgendered as she/her always just felt like a little jab in the gut.”“I can go through the world and even my job a lot more comfortably,” they added. Some NBA executives have known how Flores identifies for several months. Many of Flores’ colleagues learned when they revealed it at preseason meetings last month.Flores has worked games for about a decade in both the G League and the WNBA. They have been previously picked to work some of the biggest events in basketball — the G League Finals, the WNBA Finals and the NCAA women’s national championship...

HOUSTON (AP) — Astros starter Cristian Javier gave up three runs to the Texas Rangers in the first inning while getting just one out before being replaced Monday night in Game 7 of the AL Championship Series. Javier entered 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA in the playoffs this year and 4-0 with a 0.82 ERA in four career postseason starts for Houston. But his struggles started immediately after he retired leadoff batter Marcus Semien on a grounder. Corey Seager launched a fastball 440 feet into the second deck in right field for a home run. Evan Carter walked and stole second base before scoring on a single by Adolis García, which caromed off the wall in left field. García stole second and Mitch Garver followed with a pop-fly single to left-center field. The ball bounced off the shoulder of diving left fielder Michael Brantley, allowing García to score to make it 3-0. A sharp single to left by Jonah Heim put runners at the corners, and Javier was removed by manager Dusty Baker.Phil Maton took ove...

China’s crackdown on cyber scams in Southeast Asia ensnares thousands but leaves the networks intact

BANGKOK (AP) — Zhang Hongliang, a former restaurant manager in central China, took various gigs in and outside China to support his family after losing his job during the COVID-19 pandemic. In March, a job offer to teach Chinese cooking at a restaurant led him into a cyber scam compound in Myanmar, where he was instead ordered to lure Chinese into giving up their savings for fake investment schemes via social media platforms.Zhang is one of tens of thousands of people, mostly but not all Chinese, who have become ensnared in cyber scam networks run by powerful Chinese criminal syndicates in Southeast Asia. Regional and Chinese authorities have netted thousands of people in a crackdown, but experts say they are failing to root out the local elites and criminal networks that are bound to keep running the schemes. When scam operations are shut down in one place they often just resurface elsewhere. The problem is an embarrassment for Beijing and is discouraging ordinary Chinese from travel...

Brandon Staley looks for reset for Chargers, but the same problems have persisted during his tenure

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 20:19:27 GMT

Brandon Staley is looking for a reset for his Los Angeles Chargers after two straight losses and a 2-4 start to the season. It’s a good idea in theory — and when playing Madden — except the Chargers have already had their bye week and many of their problems have persisted throughout Staley’s three-year tenure as coach.Sunday’s 31-17 loss to Kansas City showed the Chargers are nowhere close to contending for a division title, and their odds of returning to the playoffs are getting longer. In an AFC that has 10 teams at .500 or better, Los Angeles is tied with Tennessee for the second-worst record in the conference. Only Denver and New England are worse at 2-5.On Monday, Staley was more focused on the immediate issues than the big picture.“The fundamentals focus needs to be on the identity of your football team. Just put one foot in front of the other and not be thinking too much about the telescope and make sure you’re focusing on the microscope and things we ca...

(NEXSTAR) — Looking at the mountains, it's hard not to wonder what sort of rare minerals you might find in Colorado. If you haven't spent any time searching for gemstones, you may not know Colorado is home to several. That includes aquamarine, a blue variety of the mineral beryl, according to the Colorado Geological Survey. Despite it being the state gemstone since 1971, you may not be able to find much on your own, since many of the areas where aquamarine is found are on land held by private entities. Outrageous expenses, devastating scoops: One climate reporter mourns the death of another

My favorite John Vidal story, like all of John’s stories, was best told by John himself.Back in 2015, he was in the middle of a mighty reporting trip that took him down the 2,500-mile length of the Mekong River, documenting its strangulation by hydroelectric dams for the Guardian. After staying in a village for a few days in Laos, he thanked the locals for their hospitality by paying for a new water well. When he returned to the Guardian’s shining canal-side offices in London, pockets emptied onto a desk already covered in dog-eared expense receipts, he wrote to the accounting department and claimed the price of the well under the heading of “meals and entertainment.” As an explanation, he added: “Drinks for 500 people.”“Do you think some fucking Guardian beancounter is going to tell me I can’t buy these people a well?” he would conclude in the retelling. It’s a story that combines John’s two great passions in journalism: justice for the planet’s most benighte...

EU’s foreign policy weakness is here to stay

Mujtaba Rahman is the head of Eurasia Group’s Europe practice. He tweets at @Mij_Europe.The feverish pitch of international diplomacy since the terrorist attacks on Israel have just highlighted Europe’s big conundrum: Why, as a global economic, trade and regulatory superpower, does the European Union find it so hard to be relevant and punch firmly on the global stage? This problem has been cruelly highlighted by the bloc’s response to the Gaza crisis, seriously undermining its credibility as a foreign policy actor — and even undoing some of the gains it made following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year. The EU’s initial response to the crisis was marked by European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi announcing a unilateral suspension of all EU development aid to Palestine, totaling some €691million, only to have the Commission then clarify the aid would be “reviewed” — not suspended.Later, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s trip to Israel...
