That's iOS 16.4.1, iPadOS 16.4.1, and macOS 13.3.1. If your device isn't currently running that, it won't be eligible for these. They are installed automatically by default but you can go into Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates > Security Responses & System Files. When you see these rapid updates, like the name implies, you should install them as so...

Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio was convicted on seditious conspiracy charges alongside three other leaders of the right-wing group in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. The verdict, delivered in a Washington, D.C., courtroom Thursday, represents the third consecutive win for the Justice Department as it brings the rarely used charge, securing guilty verdicts both for the self-proclaimed chauvinist group and the far-right Oath Keepers militia.Seditious conspiracy is among the most weighty charges the Justice Department has brought as a result of the attack, carrying up to 20 years in prison.During the trial, which lasted for more than three months, prosecutors reviewed how the group discussed their plans for Jan. 6, 2021, ahead of the rally, including a memo titled “1776 Returns,” which outlined plans to occupy congressional buildings and the layout of the complex.Prosecutors credited the Proud Boys with being some of the first to breach barriers a...

Enter the Fantastical World of Myrlande Constant at the Fowler

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:02:09 GMT

Haitian artist Myrlande Constant’s fantastical world is a vast expanse of gods, demigods, spirits, saints, symbols, nature, myth, and magic — expressed in large-scale embroidered and hand-beaded narrative tapestries of superlative shimmer, divinity, and detail. For more than 30 years, Constant has labored night and day in the service of her visions, translating lived experiences and compositional directives received from her religious consciousness into symphonies of hundreds of thousands of stitches, beads, and sequins. For sheer intensiveness of her process — quite apart from the pointed and poignant content — it’s easy to understand her work in a ritualistic, devotional framework. But it’s in considering the operatic tableaux and the transcendent stories of men, women, gods, monsters, and integrative post-colonial religiosity that the mind is truly set ablaze.Myrlande Constant: Milocan Tous les Saints Tous les Morts (Milokan, all the saints, all the dead), c. 2000; beads, sequins...

Larry Magid: Voice cloning makes virtual kidnapping more convincing

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:02:09 GMT

Last week I wrote about a call I received claiming my wife had been kidnapped and demanding ransom. It came from a number that was nearly the same as my wife’s, began with a crying distraught woman, and as I explained in the column, the scammer used other tricks to make me think it might have been real. It was an extremely scary 20 minutes before I knew she was OK.Larry Magid That column resulted in numerous emails, including some from readers who had similar experiences. One grandmother wrote, “A sobbing girl came on the phone claiming to be my teenage granddaughter and using her name. She said she had hit someone with her car and was in the police station. Said she was injured but didn’t want to tell her parents and get in trouble over the accident.”But criminals are taking the scam even further by using AI to clone the voice of the supposed kidnapping victim to make the call even more convincing. As a Federal Trade Commission blog post explains, “A scammer could use AI to cl...

Stock market today: Wall Street sinks as bank fears flare

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are sinking on Wall Street Thursday as worries crank higher about a cracking U.S. banking system. The S&P 500 was 0.7% lower in midday trading as several market-moving forces swirled, from the latest rate increase by the European Central Bank to a report indicating more U.S. workers got laid off last week than expected. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 390 points, or 1.2%, at 33,023, as of 11:45 a.m. Eastern time, while the Nasdaq composite was 0.4% lower. Some of the wildest action was in the financial industry, where shares of PacWest Bancorp tumbled 48.4%. It’s been under heavy scrutiny by investors recently following three of the four largest U.S. bank failures in history. Wall Street has been hunting for other possible weak links in the system, which could see a swift exodus of customer deposits as the industry contends with much higher interest rates. PacWest said overnight that it’s considering its options and that several potential partner...
