As work begins on the largest US dam removal project on the California-Oregon border, tribes look to a future of growth

BY ADAM BEAM | Associated PressSACRAMENTO — The largest dam removal project in United States history is underway along the California-Oregon border — a process that won’t conclude until the end of next year with the help of heavy machinery and explosives. But in some ways, removing the dams is the easy part. The hard part will come over the next decade as workers, partnering with Native American tribes, plant and monitor nearly 17 billion seeds as they try to restore the Klamath River and the surrounding land to what it looked like before the dams started to go up more than a century ago.The demolition is part of a national movement to return the natural flow of the nation’s rivers and restore habitat for fish and the ecosystems that sustain other wildlife. 49ers’ Drake Jackson eager to put added muscle to use at training camp

SANTA CLARA — With the 49ers sending an inside linebacker blitz Sunday, second-year defensive end Drake Jackson was compromised. When Elijah Mitchell circled out of the backfield to the left, it was up to the 6-foot-4, 273-pound Jackson to keep up with a 200-pound running back 25 yards downfield.“That just happens every time an inside linebacker blitzes and you’re in scat protection,” coach Kyle Shanahan said. “When the back goes, the D-end has to peel. The pass was a bit of a wobbler, but it really didn’t matter because Jackson had stayed with Mitchell step for step. The ball fell incomplete.Much to the relief of Jackson.“That play, it just so happened I had to do what I had to do,” Jackson said...
